🌳🌍 The EU's initiative to plant 3 billion trees by 2030 is taking root, and it's time to get involved! Ahead of International Day of Forests, the European Commission is hosting the 'Rooting for 3 Billion Trees' conference, bringing together tree planting organizations, NGOs, and authorities to share best practices and recommendations for achieving this ambitious goal. 🌱
Virginijus Sinkevičius, Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans, and Fisheries, emphasized the importance of action, stating, "We do not settle just for words, we want results on the ground." With 44 organizations already reporting trees into the system across all 27 Member States, it's clear that this pledge is backed by serious commitment.
At the event, representatives from various countries, including Irish Minister for Environment Pippa Hackett, will outline their contributions to the target. Belgium leads the way with over 5 million trees reported, followed by Czechia and Portugal. France has also committed to planting 1 billion trees by 2030.
The conference focuses on themes such as natural regeneration and reforestation after forest fires, highlighting the importance of biodiversity-friendly practices in combating climate change. To support these efforts, the European Commission adopted new guidelines on biodiversity-friendly afforestation and reforestation.
But this initiative isn't just for policymakers—it's for everyone. As part of the #ForOurPlanet campaign, citizens are encouraged to take action, big or small, to bring nature back into their lives. 🌿
